A Continuing Education &Training Program
In Defensive Shooting

A program design for the Concealed Handgun license holder and a person who owns or carries a firearm for defensive propose. Offering those the opportunity to practice the fundamentals to advanced defensive shooting techniques and tactics, under the safety and supervision of experienced instructors.
The average person, CHL holder and even Law Enforcement Officer's practice session on public ranges are often restricted; to no more than 1 shot every 3 seconds, no drawing from holster or concealment, limited fields of fire, target options, and firing positions. These are just a few of the common restrictions. The list is long leaving the typical practice session on public ranges to firing from a bench one shot at a time, at one target, that may or may not represent the human anatomy, resulting in nothing remotely like the circumstance that persons may have to use a firearm for in a defensive situation .
Beyond the CHL sessions are held every Tuesday and Thursday evening starting @ 6 pm. As well as the 1st and 3rd Sunday @ 2 pm, each class is 2 hours in length. Students purchase blocks of training 10 hours at a time and much like a coffee punch card, using them at their connivance, allowing them to be flexible in their training. Many new to defensive shooting may want to attend weekly, for several months. Others who have more experience may want to show up from time to time for a fundamental tune up and the opportunity to experience a variety of defensive scenarios and target options not readily available to the public or on public ranges.
The first hour is spent reviewing the fundamentals of safety, accuracy and speed, weapon presentation and weapon manipulations, reloads and malfunction clearance. We start with dry drills (no ammunition) working into live fire exercises. It all starts and ends with the Fundamentals. We all have to perform them and practice them, regardless of your skill level, or the level you wish to achieve. To get there you will practice the fundamentals and to maintain it you will practice the fundamentals! There are no magic bullets, no bolt on abilities or Secret Ninja Warrior Tactics, there is only the fundamentals and your ability to perform them, in a variety of situations.
The second hour is a mix of defensive shooting scenarios and ballistic experiments. NOT based on the rules of any game but on life's experiences, practical possibilities and criminal trends.
The rules that are practiced and enforced are the four rules of firearms safety
1. Treat all firearms as if loaded.
2. Do not negligently allow the muzzle to cover anything you do not wish to destroy.
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until the decision to shoot has been made.
4. Positively identify your target, being aware of what's between and beyond.
Students will be given the chance to experience each scenario several times allowing them to experiment with the techniques and tactics that suit them best. No record of score is kept no penalties are given, this is not competition!
Instructors coach students and offer examples of other techniques or methods that may enhance the students’ personal abilities. Tactics we understand are a product of the environment and situation at hand, requiring the defensive shooter in today's world of diversified violent crimes, to be flexible in the strategies and the methods of deploying them.
There is no one correct way or one solution to any give problem, again this is not a competition, students are not evaluated against other students and the only reason a time or hits on targets would be recorded is so that students and instructors can evaluate a given technique or tactic for that individual and the situation at hand.
Scenarios may include such target options and shooting opportunities as : multiple targets, moving targets, engaging targets on the move, from cover, through cover, from vehicles, into vehicles, low light, no light, and flashlight methods and strategies. Students will also be able given opportunities and encouraged to test the ballistic capabilities and limitation of their chosen carry ammunition and not rely on a retail store clerks recommendations of (its what I carry). Scenarios are not limited to anything but safety, and are often exploring what is possible and achievable by the student and their equipment, as well the limitations of both.
